501 Arabic Verbs

The 501 verbs conjugated in this book were selected according to W. Fromm, Häufigkeitswörterbuch der modernen arabischen Zeitungssprache (Leipzig, 1982). For each of the 501 verbs, there is a heading with, on the right, the verb itself in Arabic and English and, on the upper left, the root and Form.

The translation next to the Arabic verb provides only a selection of possible meanings. For a full treatment, consult a dictionary because words in Arabic, as in every language, can cover a wide range of meanings, and this range only rarely overlaps exactly between any two languages.

The semantic range of Arabic words is often very different from that of English, and words may be used in ways that are completely unexpected. One of the great pleasures of learning Arabic—or of any foreign language—is the slow process of coming to grasp and then to internalize the train of thought that links ideas in the mind of the native speaker, although at first they appear to have no relation to each other in the mind of the student.

After the heading, the active voice is conjugated with the perfect and imperfect indicative in the right column and the subjunctive and jussive in the left. Beneath these appear, in the right column, the active and passive participles and the verbal noun, and in the left column, the imperative. Grammatical terms are provided in English. For transitive verbs (and for some intransitive verbs that are often used impersonally), the passive is also provided, in the same format as the active.

Each verb is followed by a few sentences that serve as examples of how it is used. As in English, verbs often acquire different meanings depending on whether they connect to the following noun by using the accusative or a preposition and, if by a preposition, depending on which preposition is used.

It is therefore a good idea to study these examples not only to see how the verb is conjugated but to see how its meaning may alter in accordance with the way it governs its object. In the translations of the sentences, the English words corresponding to the verb under treatment are italicized, along with any other English words included in the verb—such as subject and object pronouns that are prefixed or suffixed to the verb—although these are separate words in English.

The order of the conjugation tables is by root. When several verbs derive from one root, they are arranged in the numerical order of the Form. At the end of the book is an index of verbs in strict alphabetical order to help you locate a verb when you are uncertain of its root.
