This book gathers together everything that you need to know about writing and publishing a novel. It saves you time and effort by distilling our 20 years of novel-writing, teaching creative writing, and working in publishing into one place. If you were to plough through all the books that we’ve read, and have all the experiences and training that we’ve had, you wouldn’t need most of this book, but you would need to expand your home to accommodate your library and be 20 years older.
This book prevents you having to re-invent the wheel. Often writers write something and think ‘Hmm, that’s good, I wonder if anyone’s thought of doing something like that before?’ This book gives you the answers to such questions.
This book also helps you to avoid repeating other people’s mistakes. We’ve made mistakes ourselves and gathered mistakes from other people so that you don’t have to. This saves you time, stress, and embarrassment. So, would you rather read 20 books that each tell you a bit of what you need, or one book that has just about everything?
It’s really no contest. We use a lot of different novels as examples to illustrate what we’re talking about. You don’t need to have read them to understand the points we’re making (although, of course, we think that these are books worth reading).
You’ll notice that we use Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice quite often as an example. If you read just one book in tandem with this one, that’s the book we’d suggest.
